BILL SIMPSON'S STORY

A former race driver who rose roaring down drag strips in his native Southern California all the way to competing in the Indianapolis 500, Bill Simpson’s true calling was making his sport safer. He has been consulted by famed speedways and sanctioning bodies, but it was in the field of driver safety – through his innovative helmets, uniforms, gloves, and shoes – that he really made his mark.

His products were so well received that many of the world’s best drivers wouldn't compete without them. Said NASCAR champion Rusty Wallace, “Bill was never the kind of guy who cut corners. He didn’t say, ‘I’m going to make a cheaper helmet or a cheaper uniform. It’s not going to be quite as good in quality, but it’s going to be pretty good.’ Simpson wouldn’t compromise, ever.”

Famed NASCAR and Indy Car team owner Chip Ganassi said of his friend, Bill Simpson, “You know, Bill is a mad scientist kind of guy. He loves looking at something and seeing how he might be able to make it better.”

SUCCESSES

In the process, everyday items get a bit more interesting. Simpson re-released a cult favorite, his signature wallet. Twenty years ago, searching for a simple wallet for himself, Simpson decided to fabricate his own. Naturally, it had a motorsports theme, having been made with the same type of material used in his driver-restraint systems. Before long, his racing friends wanted copies … and now, you can have one, too!

Bill Simpson has also authored two acclaimed books: “Racing Safely, Living Dangerously,” a rollicking ride through his life as a race-driver-turned-motorsports-mogul, and “Through the Fire,” described best by its subtitle: “Fast times, good times, bad times, and sad times, from Indy to Earnhardt.” Both books take the reader into racing’s backrooms and barrooms. The stories told are sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, but always 100 percent Simpson.
